Prospects for the Detection of the Deep Solar Meridional Circulation
نویسنده
چکیده
We perform helioseismic holography to assess the noise in p-mode travel-time shifts which would form the basis of inferences of large-scale flows throughout the solar convection zone. We also derive the expected travel times from a parameterized return (equatorward) flow component of the meridional circulation at the base of the convection zone from forward models under the assumption of the ray and Born approximations. From estimates of the signal-to-noise ratio for measurements focused near the base of the convection zone, we conclude that the helioseismic detection of the deep meridional flow including the return component may not be possible using data spanning an interval less than a solar cycle. Estimating the Solar Meridional Circulation by Normal Mode Decom- position
The objective of this article is to use Fourier-Hankel decomposition as suggested earlier by Braun & Fan (1998) to estimate the integrated horizontal meridional flow velocity as a function of mode penetration depth, and to find ways of potentially improve this technique. We use a time series of 43200 (30 days) consecutive full-disk Dopplergrams obtained by the MDI (Michelson Doppler Imager) ins...
متن کاملMeridional Circulation and Global Solar Oscillations
We investigate the influence of large-scale meridional circulation on solar p-modes by quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, as proposed by Lavely and Ritzwoller (1992). As an input flow we use various models of stationary meridional circulation obeying the continuity equation. This flow perturbs the eigenmodes of an equilibrium model of the Sun. We derive the signatures of the meridional circu...
متن کاملChapter 10. SOLAR ENERGY AND ITS BIOLOGICAL–PHYSICAL INTERACTIONS IN THE SEA
For over 4 billion years, solar radiation has played a profound role in driving the physical circulation of the atmosphere, the oceans, and the biological processes responsible for sustaining life on Earth. The angular distribution of, and diel and seasonal changes in, solar radiation are dictated by the relation of Earth’s axis to the Sun, the orbital angular velocity of Earth, and the gravita...
متن کاملHelioseismic data inclusion in solar dynamo models
An essential ingredient in kinematic dynamo models of the solar cycle is the internal velocity field within the simulation domain – the solar convection zone. In the last decade or so, the field of helioseismology has revolutionized our understanding of this velocity field. In particular, the internal differential rotation of the Sun is now fairly well constrained by helioseismic observations a...
متن کاملMHD theory of the solar tachocline with meridional flow
It has been shown that the best explanation for the formation of the tachocline is that of magnetic nature. We present here the first simulations of the solar tachocline, which self-consistently include the meridional circulation. We show that the meridional circulations significantly change the shape and the characteristics of the tachocline. We find that after the inclusion of the meridional ...
